Nothing more fair (Robert Reinick) English translation by Jennifer Parker

When at first my eyes beheld you,

how you were so fair and lovely,

I did not think in all my days

to see a thing that was more fair,

than in that pair of beauteous eyes

to gaze and gaze forever more.

But since then long o thee I've gazed,

until you did become my bride;

and then again methought I should

see nothing fairer, nor ever could,

nor on thy crimson mouth to press

an endless kiss of tenderness.

Since then I've kissed so oft, so long,

and my wife you have become,

and may ever rest assured

that there can nothing fairer be

than with a dear wife

to be one in soul and body.
